Stefan Höltgen: interfaces - serial murder in the film. Marburg: fueling 2010th (= Marburger writings on media 16)
A Vorabrezension of Petra Heupel
At first glance, it seems - from a purely external - normal and unremarkable. But at its core lies an abnormal personality. The serial killer finds his highest satisfaction in the killing, his actions are bestial, his handwriting is individual and makes him unique. At least since Jack the Ripper London caused mischief to practice crime and violence in addition to fear from a certain fascination on society. It is the media coverage today makes the viewer participate in the intense action. But it is not the victim, who draw attention to themselves, but the culprit seems to proceed from him as a special fascination.
The serial killer is found, mostly in "aestheticized form" (quotes below, unless otherwise noted: Stefan Höltgen), in many areas: in literature, film, art, but also in reality. He is not a purely fictional creation, but a real person whose history often serves as a model of fiction. The aesthetic moment and the question of the operational document, taking account of fact and fiction are just some of the objects of investigation in Höltgen current book "interfaces - serial murder in the film, which deals with the authentic serial killer movie. How is the concept of "authenticity" to be understood in this context? According Höltgen notion of authenticity in the film indicates the context not to the representation of a reality außermedialen out, but this constituted a real impression, based on an aesthetic process. In addition to a historical discourse analysis, this book provides a comprehensive overview of the authentic serial killer film with reference from criminology and media studies issues and discussed the question of the authenticity determination and their impact on the audience that is addressed both at the conscious or unconscious level, through various aesthetic attributes and defined.
The essence of the book is based on the filmanalytic part. 37 Selected serial killer films will be discussed in a complex and chronological presentation of the subject and discourse history of early, classical, modern and postmodern phase, which is emphasized both fiction and kriminalhistorischen conditions are based, the fact that see Höltgen book films mentioned, the have not yet been investigated scientifically.
One of the most discussed films is Hitchcock's' classic "Psycho". But the title of the film projects the image of the killer on the protagonists. What makes this film so unique and what effect it exerted At that affect the public? These questions Höltgen detail in his analysis on the ground. "Psycho" sets an example of the modern phase of the serial killer film, which is - declared due to the rise of media change - as a link between the classical and the modern period. Höltgen argument based on the fact that the film is well-known motifs and structures of the horror and horror cinema has, however, surprised by his new narrative and representation techniques to the audience. The inherent "shock-aesthetics" of the film flows, as well as critical reviews of its time, a technical in the analysis and sublimated it.
Following the filmanalytic part, some of the already investigated films taken up and used as the basis of a structured discourse analysis, among other aspects of visual and narrative motifs, of intertextuality in the light of the film and art history and the impact of technological development for the film lists. Similarly, this analysis has interesting ways of looking at the reception and expectations, and the censorship.
On the basis of his dissertation ("Interfaces - The construction of authenticity in the serial killer movie", Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn, 2009) was the text for this edition revised and supplemented by color illustrations along with a title and register people.
Also a book for experts and a serial killer movie lovers. Beginners should, however, accept the fact that they hold an academic book in hand, which does not serve the pure entertainment value.
The band appears in the spring of 2010 for incitement (Marburg).
